Maker vs Taker Fees: Exchange by Exchange

Published October 9, 2026 · 6 min read

Every trade pays a fee, and which one depends on how you place the order. A maker order waits on the order book; a taker order fills immediately. Choosing the right order type is the quickest way to cut what you pay, and on some exchanges it changes the fee a lot.

On MEXC, a limit order that rests on the book costs $0.00 on a hypothetical $1,000.00 spot trade, against $0.50 for a market order.

Maker and taker in one minute

  • Maker: your order adds liquidity. A limit order priced away from the market, which waits for someone else to trade against it, is a maker order when it rests on the book.
  • Taker: your order removes liquidity. A market order, or a limit order priced so that it fills straight away, is a taker order.
  • The trade-off: a maker order is not guaranteed to fill, because the price may never reach it. A taker order fills now, at the best price available, and pays the taker rate for that certainty.

Spot trading: maker vs taker, exchange by exchange

Base rates for regular accounts, read from each exchange's own pages on 30 Sep 2026. The dollar amounts are our arithmetic on a hypothetical $1,000.00 order, not an exchange figure: the rate multiplied by the order size, for one side of one trade.

Bybit0.1%non-VIP0.1%non-VIP$1.00$1.00Sign up
Bitget0.1%base rate0.1%base rate$1.00$1.00Sign up

The widest gap among the exchanges we could confirm is on MEXC: a maker order saves $0.50 per $1,000.00 traded compared with a taker order.

Bybit and Bitget charge the same maker and taker rate at the base level, so order type does not change the fee there. It can still matter on a higher volume or VIP tier, so check your own account's fee page.

We could not confirm OKX or KCEX's figures on their own pages, so none are quoted. See the OKX fee schedule and KCEX fee schedule.

Futures trading: fees on the full position

Futures fees are charged on the full position size, not on your margin, and again when you close. That is why the maker rate matters most for active futures traders. Same hypothetical $1,000.00 order, one side:

Bitget0.02%USDT-M, varies by account level0.06%USDT-M, varies by account level$0.20$0.60Sign up

Futures figures are the exchange's base rates and vary by contract and account level; see the futures trading guide for how fees compound with leverage.

How to place maker orders

  • Use a limit order priced away from the current market, so it waits on the book instead of filling at once.
  • Look for a post-only option in the order form, where the exchange offers one: it cancels the order rather than let it fill as a taker.
  • Be patient on entries you are not in a hurry for, such as regular buys and exits at a target price.
  • Use market orders only when speed matters more than the fee difference.
  • Check the fee line shown before you confirm; it tells you which rate you are about to pay.

To see what any rate costs on your own trade size, use the trading fee calculator, and see the full exchange fee comparison for every exchange side by side.
